GAME4CHANGE Multiplier Event in Kyiv:
Digital Serious Games and Climate Change Communication

On 16 April 2026, a Multiplier Event of the Erasmus+ GAME4CHANGE – Digital Serious Games for Climate Change Education project was held in Kyiv within the framework of the Days of Science 2026 at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (TSNUK).

The event brought together representatives of the academic, research and media communities to explore the potential of digital serious games as innovative tools for climate change education, research, communication and active participation in higher education.

A central part of the event was the roundtable “Digital Serious Games as a Form of Media Narrative in Climate Change Communication”, organized within the VII International Scientific and Practical Conference “Current Issues of the Media Space.” The discussion brought together researchers, educators and media professionals and focused on the educational, environmental and communicative dimensions of serious games, as well as their potential to address contemporary climate-related challenges.

The conference programme also featured research developed by members of the TSNUK academic community in areas closely related to the objectives of GAME4CHANGE. Aliona Romaniuk, Assistant Professor and PhD Candidate at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism, presented “Serious Game as a Response to Disinformation about Radiation Under Wartime Conditions.” Thomas-Georg Arktoyskiy, a Master’s student at the Institute, presented “Interactive Narrative in Video Games as a Communication Tool Regarding Climate Change Issues.” Both contributions were included in the conference Book of Abstracts.

The Kyiv Multiplier Event directly supported the broader objectives of GAME4CHANGE, which aims to promote innovative and inclusive approaches to environmental and climate education through digital serious games and gamification. In particular, the project seeks to:

  • Equip educators with practical tools and strategies for integrating gamification and serious games into university curricula;
  • Engage students through interactive learning activities that strengthen understanding of climate-related issues and encourage active participation;
  • Promote inclusion by supporting accessible digital educational tools for diverse groups of learners, including vulnerable students;
  • Create lasting educational impact through innovative learning resources that can be adapted and incorporated into future higher education and postgraduate courses on environmental topics;
  • Build a European network that facilitates knowledge exchange and cooperation among universities and other stakeholders working to advance innovative environmental and climate education.

As part of the Days of Science 2026, the event also contributed to the wider mission of the Institute of Journalism as a platform for academic exchange, bringing together established researchers, media professionals and young scholars around contemporary challenges in communication, technology and society.

Through the Kyiv Multiplier Event, GAME4CHANGE strengthened the dissemination of project knowledge, encouraged stakeholder engagement and promoted dialogue on innovative approaches to sustainable higher education. The event also highlighted the connections between environmental education, digital technologies, media communication and active student participation, demonstrating the potential of serious games to become an effective educational and communication tool for addressing climate change.
